“Strategies for Flood Mitigation in Greater Houston, Edition 1”, a report released today by the Greater Houston Flood Mitigation Consortium, calls for accelerating the paradigm shift underway in how the Houston area plans for and recovers from flooding and its consequences. While eliminating flooding in Houston is not possible, there are practical opportunities for reducing the effect flooding has on people’s lives. This initial report, which is based on current information from multiple agencies and experts, draws a number of key conclusions about the level of flood protection across area watersheds; the importance of community awareness and engagement; and flood mitigation tactics such as regulations, local drainage, buyouts and area reservoirs.

Houston Endowment led the creation of the Consortium to make sure that all communities benefit from flood mitigation efforts. We believe that providing the best possible information to decision-makers and residents is critical in helping make that happen. We are grateful to our co-funders, Kinder Foundation and the Cynthia & George Mitchell Foundation, and for the additional support from the Walton Family Foundation, Cullen Foundation, and Harte Charitable Foundation.
