For nine local artists, the distinction of being named a 2024 Jones Artist was more than mere recognition. It was an opportunity to collaborate with creatives across the city and expand the boundaries of their work.
“A lot of the time…you just don’t even know the doors that you need to knock on,” says Kaima Akarue, a 2024 Jones Artist Award recipient. “This program does a really good job about keeping us in the conversation.”
Akarue, along with Krista Leigh Steinke, Tiffany Heng-Hui Lee, Venessa Monokian, Christopher Blay, Guadalupe Hernandez, Kim Le, Jean Shon, and Stanley Bermudez, were selected for the Jones Artist Awards Program from a pool of 93 applicants and received support and the opportunity to exhibit their work on a rotating basis in Houston Endowment’s headquarters.
Below, they share their experiences with the program, how it supported their artistic careers, and what it means for Houston’s creative landscape.
