Opportunity knocks: Jones Artists reflect on program’s impact

For nine local artists, the distinction of being named a 2024 Jones Artist was more than mere recognition. It was an opportunity to collaborate with creatives across the city and expand the boundaries of their work.

“A lot of the time…you just don’t even know the doors that you need to knock on,” says Kaima Akarue(opens in new window), a 2024 Jones Artist Award recipient. “This program does a really good job about keeping us in the conversation.”

Akarue, along with Krista Leigh Steinke(opens in new window), Tiffany Heng-Hui Lee(opens in new window), Venessa Monokian(opens in new window), Christopher Blay(opens in new window), Guadalupe Hernandez(opens in new window), Kim Le(opens in new window), Jean Shon(opens in new window), and Stanley Bermudez(opens in new window), were selected for the Jones Artist Awards Program from a pool of 93 applicants and received support and the opportunity to exhibit their work on a rotating basis in Houston Endowment’s headquarters.

Below, they share their experiences with the program, how it supported their artistic careers, and what it means for Houston’s creative landscape.
