When the artist is the subject: Why a regional survey matters now
What’s happening: In the second episode of our webinar series, Upstream,we explored an essential question: How do artists live and work in Houston? This question is the basis of the Greater Houston Artist Survey(opens in new window), a tool created by and for artists and intended to capture the most detailed portrait yet of their working life, challenges, and opportunities for growth.
The conversation: Art leaders and data experts weighed in on the unique approach to creating the survey, hopeful findings, and the impact the results can have citywide.
“That’s why we’re doing the work: for our Foundation to learn, but more importantly, for the sector to understand, and for the people of Houston to understand how artists contribute to not only our economy, but to our greatest sense of self,” said panelist Bao-Long Chu, program director - Arts & Culture. “We are investing in arts data and creating a transparent platform so that arts data can be accessible and usable for civic leaders, public leaders for all of us.”
Other panelists included:
- Sara Jones, Evaluation Officer, Houston Endowment
- Angela Carranza, Executive Director, Fresh Arts
- Jen Benoit-Bryan, Executive Director, SMU Data Arts
- Eepi Chaad, Program Manager, Mid-America Arts Alliance
