Between Me and You
Between Me and You reflects on the rituals that bring meaning to daily life. Artists Carolina Otero, Bradley Kerl, Melissa Aytenfisu, and Lotus Bermudez seek to uncover what transforms a routine into a ritual and these practices help us feel grounded and connected to the world around us.
Featured Artists
Carolina Otero pairs photographs from her daily walks with gestural drawings in her series, Diálogos and Segundo Diálogos. Inspired by her walks during the pandemic, her works capture quiet, meditative scenes of Houston’s landscapes — live oaks, bayou waters, and power lines — that evoke calm stillness and mindful observation.
Bradley Kerl draws inspiration from his runs at Buffalo Bayou Park, a space for both personal reflection and collective gatherings. With inventive framing devices, his paintings transform fleeting experiences, like the bloom of wildflowers or a dramatic sunset, into portals that invite us to find wonder in the everyday.
Melissa Aytenfisu highlights rituals of resilience in her Imprint on Third Ward series with portraits of her neighbors in “healthy pastimes.” By incorporating found objects from each scene into her prints, Aytenfisu offers a reflection on what shapes a neighborhood.
Lotus Bermudez draws on her heritage as a “TexAsian” woman through her ceramic Rice Grains sculptures. Inspired by watching her mother and grandfather prepare rice, she now passes down the same ritual to her children. Each piece reflects the act of preparing rice, a symbol of sustenance and connection. Her work embraces themes of family, continuity, and shared traditions.
