Honoring the power and promise of citizenship
Houston Endowment grantee Bonding Against Adversity this month honored the power and promise of citizenship with its annual Constitution & Citizenship Day event, a vibrant community gathering that underscores the opportunities provided by citizenship—including greater civic engagement and economic mobility—and includes a parade organized by newly naturalized citizens, community talks on the benefits of citizenship, and resources for those who have not yet taken the step to naturalize.
In Greater Houston, more than 300,000 lawful permanent residents are eligible but face significant barriers—from high application fees to limited access to legal guidance.
“This event is truly a celebration of what it means to be an American. At Houston Endowment, we support organizations that help residents navigate the path to citizenship and participate fully in our democracy. It was inspiring to see our grantees in action, providing resources, support, and encouragement to help them overcome obstacles and achieve citizenship,” said Gislaine Williams, Program Officer for Civic Engagement.

The parade route began at MacArthur High School and included band members; cultural dancers; cars decked in red, white, and blue; trailers of festive participants; and more.

Community members dressed as individuals from American history. Pilgrims, Indigenous People, suffragettes and founding fathers joined the parade route.

Nonprofit organizations, like League of Women Voters, shared how U.S. citizens can engage with their community.

Art from Aldine ISD high schoolers adorned the community center and illustrated American icons.

Bonding Against Adversity Executive Director Mariana Sanchez was presented with a Certification of Recognition by the City of Houston for the fourth annual Constitution & Citizenship Day.

The celebration culminated with inspirational words from regional leaders, including Dr. Melissa Gonzalez, President of Lone Star College-Kingwood.

Program Officer for Civic Engagement, Gislaine Williams, visited with grantees that helped facilitate the day’s activities.
